Keurig 2.0 K-cup coffee brewers require similar maintenance to other models of Keurigs with just a few minor differences. If you are a veteran Keurig user, cleaning your unit will be a piece of cake. New members of the single serve community, pay close attention, proper cleaning and maintenance is essential to the performance and longevity of your brewer.
First, lets address cleaning the exterior. The outside of your Keurig 2.0 should be kept clean and sanitary. I have this on my chore list to do once a week however, the frequency is completely based on the amount of use your unit endures.
The steps are quick and easy:
– Start by wiping down the entire unit with a soft damp cloth.
– Next remove the drip tray and wash by hand with warm soapy water (never in the dishwasher).
– Remove the water reservoir and lid and again clean both by hand. Do not dry the interior of the water reservoir as doing so can leave behind lint that will then end up in your coffee.
– Finally, to keep the brew basket free of grinds, perform a water only cycle by lifting and lowering the handle with no K-cup inserted. Press and hold the brew button and 6 oz pf water will be dispensed (don’t forget to put a mug on the drip tray). If you have the K300 or K350, you will perform the same steps except you will need to choose the 6 oz option on the touch screen.
Also, don’t forget to wash the carafe by hand after every use.
Now for the most important part, cleaning the inside components of your brewer. Often times this is called descaling. Descaling your brewer is the absolute #1 thing you can do to extend the lifetime of your brewer (next to using filtered water). Your unit will alert you when it is time to descale however, I strongly recommend doing it more often.
– Power off your brewer.
– Empty the water reservoir.
– If you have a filter, remove and set aside.
– Pour 1 cup of distilled white vinegar into the water reservoir. If you would rather not use vinegar you can purchase a cleaning solution such as these.
– Fill the rest of the way with water.
– Run a water only brew cycle repeatedly until the water reservoir is empty.
– Disable the auto off feature on your brewer if applicable.
– Allow the brewer to sit idle for at least 30 minutes.
– Next, fill the water reservoir with water and run a water only brew cycle a minimum of 12 times or until the vinegar smell is gone.
– If you use a water filter you may replace it now.
Your Keurig 2.0 brewer is now clean as a whistle and operating at it’s peak performance!
